The Cambridge Police Department was established in 1910 with a total of five police officers under the direction of Chief Charles G. Pritchett. Prior to 1910 law enforcement had been the responsibility of bailiffs and seasonal officers who were needed because of the oyster industry.
The City of Cambridge currently maintains a modern, highly trained, and diverse staff of 50 sworn officers and 14 civilians. The department is located in the Edward E. Watkins Public Safety Complex at 8 Washington Street.
The Cambridge Police Department is the largest police agency in Dorchester County and responded to 56,563 calls for service in 2008.
The members of the Cambridge Police Department recognize that the quality of life in the community is best served by providing the finest professional law enforcement services possible.
The mission of the Cambridge Police Department is to be a committed partner with the community. The mandate is the continued protection and enhancement of diverse neighborhoods by working in partnership with citizens to creatively solve problems and to provide committed service through accountability, integrity, and respect.
